Origin Story

How An Nhien Farm began

In 2017, Nguyen Thi Lan returned to her family’s farm in Soc Trang after 10 years working in Ho Chi Minh City. She found her parents exhausted, in debt, and sick from years of pesticide exposure. The land they had farmed for three generations was depleted.

She had one question: was there another way?

She spent the next two years learning from organic farmers in the Mekong Delta, attending regenerative agriculture workshops, and reading everything she could find. In 2019, she convinced her parents to stop using chemicals entirely. Everyone in the village told them they would fail.

In 2021, An Nhien Farm’s ST25 rice won a regional award for quality. Their yields were the same as chemical-treated fields. Their costs were lower. Their soil was alive again.

How We Make It

Every step, every choice, explained

01

Soil preparation

We use fermented rice straw and composted plant matter to rebuild soil biology. No synthetic fertilizers. The soil takes 2–3 seasons to fully recover.

Water management

We use the Alternate Wetting & Drying technique, which reduces water use by 30% and cuts methane emissions significantly vs. continuous flooding.

Pest management

We plant flowers along field borders to attract predatory insects. When pests appear, we use neem oil and fermented garlic spray. Nothing synthetic.

Harvest & milling

We harvest by hand to reduce breakage. Rice is sun-dried for 3 days, then milled at a local mill we helped transition to stone-milling. This preserves the bran layer.

ST25 Rice Seed

◯ Soc Trang PGS Seed Bank, 40km from the farm

We use only certified ST25 seed stock. We replant 20% of each harvest back into seed stock to keep the strain pure.

Compost

◯ On-farm, made from rice straw and kitchen waste

Takes 3 months to mature. We make 4 tons per season — enough for 2 hectares without any external fertilizer input.

Water

◯ Mekong irrigation system

We are currently working with neighbors to test a shared bioswale system to filter irrigation water before it enters our fields.

What we’re still working on

We don’t yet have official organic certification — the PGS process takes 2 years. We are in year 1. Until then, you have only our word and the open invitation to visit the farm.

Community Impact

Who else this makes a difference for

Beyond the 12 families who farm with An Nhien, there is a wider ripple. The local mill we helped transition to stone-milling now processes rice for 5 other small farms. Our composting method has been adopted by 3 neighboring farms.

We run open farm days twice a year where anyone — farmers, students, city dwellers — can come and spend a day in the field. No fee. We believe the most powerful thing we can do is show people that this works.
