[Korea] The Peace Foundation and its work for peace

In the first days of Vcil Travel School Korea IV, the group will visit the DMZ, the demilitarised zone on the border between South and North Korea, to learn about the history of the divided peninsula and the lasting effects of that division on the region.

Joining the session is a representative of The Peace Foundation, an independent non-profit think tank founded in 2004 to promote lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula and ease the pain of division.

The Peace Foundation's work centres on three areas: peace research, peace education and the peace movement. It produces analyses of current affairs, expert forums, international policy exchanges and seminars on diplomatic and security issues between the two Koreas, and runs leadership and citizenship training programmes and activities that promote dialogue for peace.

What stands out in The Peace Foundation's approach is its effort to offer diagnoses and proposals that go beyond the logic of confrontation between political factions. Convinced that “only peace is the answer”, the organisation closely follows issues of peace and reunification and gives early warning of looming crises.

At the DMZ, participants will look across at North Korea from the South, visit exhibition spaces and archives on the division, and hear specific stories from the peninsula's history.

Through The Peace Foundation's sharing, the group will learn why the division continues to shape South Korea's political, social and security life, and what efforts are under way to reduce tension and build peace.

For Vcil Travel School, arriving in a place is never just “passing through” famous sights. It is a chance to understand the layers of history and context that made the country, before going deeper into the stories of development, community and alternative pathways in Korea.
