Why the Vcil Membership Community exists
Wanting to change isn't enough — you need resources, knowledge and companions
In the face of today's crises and the pressing problems in education, the environment, ecology and society, all of us want to do something. Yet if we feel powerless, or act on emotion alone, lacking resources in knowledge, finance, people and community, it is hard to go far — let alone address problems at their root.
That is why the Vcil Membership Community was created: to bring together individuals and community organisations who share the aspiration to build a happy, inclusive and regenerative society — to learn together, share resources, collaborate and support one another on the journey of social creation.
A community holding shared values
We are oriented toward values of collaboration, sharing, generosity, acting for the common good, sharing benefits, contributing, taking responsibility and growing together. We respect diversity in knowledge, understanding, age, expertise, culture, perspective and gender. This diversity plays a vital role in creating a healthy and sustainable community.
Experiments in new / alternative economies
The Membership Community is where we experiment with economic models rooted in localization, the solidarity economy, the gift economy and the commons… — models that empower local communities, decided by, benefiting and co-created with local people.
Sharing, using and regenerating resources responsibly
We contribute resources together so the whole community grows richer and more abundant — knowledge, relationships, skills, land, food, finance… These resources circulate and are shared within the community through experiments in new economies, so they become ever more abundant and create greater impact.
About Vcil Community
A community acting for a flourishing and regenerative society
Vcil Community began as an alternative-education experiment, starting in 2014. Over time we expanded into advancing social movements, with the aspiration to generate practical action at the individual, organisational, community, regional and transnational levels to genuinely build a flourishing and regenerative society.
Vcil Community approaches social issues in an interdisciplinary, intergenerational, intercultural and interfaith way; approaching from a systems perspective and acting within local context and resources.
We believe that sustainable, long-term change must come from the transformation of people and the transformation of systems. That is why we focus on three main areas:
Alternative education
Through initiatives that help reimagine education — bringing lifelong learning, self-directed learning, project-based learning and context-based learning to more people — set within an understanding of how the capitalist economic system operates. More importantly, helping learners understand themselves and the world, and from there nurturing a spirit of social entrepreneurship.
Social creation
We initiate ventures to experiment with models of organisation, business and learning grounded in the principles of regeneration, inclusion and fairness, within ecological limits. Through this we aim to create systemic change and drive substantive, long-term change in community and society.
Building community and networks
Combining alternative education and social creation, we create a community operated through shared values, structures, finances, benefit-sharing and networks oriented toward wellbeing and regeneration. This is the foundation from which we support social movements to be sustainable and long-term, through mechanisms that circulate diverse resources within the community.

Alongside revenue from the initiatives Vcil operates, membership fees are Vcil's second main source of income. This is a practice in the community and solidarity economy — where you contribute financial resources and gain access to and benefit from the community's shared infrastructure.
