[South Korea - Open Registration] VCIL Travel School 2023 - South Korea: From Han River Miracle to Alternative Paths

☘️ When it comes to South Korea in the context of sustainable development and economic alternatives, it is impossible not to mention the Philosophy of Enough Economy and Buddhist Economic philosophy. When looking at the "miracle of the Han River" - the rapid transformation of South Korea from one of the poorest countries to one of the richest - we need to ask: at what cost did this development happen? What has the South Korean society sacrificed in the pursuit of this "miracle"?

Exactly for those reasons, the VCIL Travel School to South Korea in 2023 will be organized with the aim of:

1. Learn about and explore South Korea's development path and the reality behind the country's economic prosperity

2. Learn from local activists and scholars who are working on alternative development models in South Korea

3. Explore and learn about Buddhist economic philosophy and the philosophy of enough

4. Understand the relationship between economic development and its social and environmental impacts

Program Details

Duration: August 22-29, 2023 (tentative)

Location: South Korea (mainly Seoul)

Cost: 2,400 USD (travel + accommodation) + 400 USD (logistics)

Number of participants: Limited to 15-20 people (first come, first served)

Facilitators: VCIL Community members and local partners in South Korea

Language: English (with translation available if needed)

Program Content

Week 1:

Day 1-2: Arrival and introduction to Seoul

Day 3: Visit to the National Assembly and meeting with representatives

Day 4: Discussion on development, inequality and alternative economics with scholars and activists

Day 5: Visit to communities affected by development and meeting with local groups

Day 6-7: Travel to provincial areas to learn about rural development and community resilience

Day 8: Reflection and closing ceremony

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the program, participants will:

1. Have a deeper understanding of South Korea's development trajectory and its consequences

2. Be familiar with alternative development models and economic philosophies

3. Have built connections with local activists and scholars in South Korea

4. Have developed critical thinking skills about development, progress, and sustainability
