[Ladakh] VTS II 2023 | Sister Bui's Impressions of the 5-Day Visit to Tar Village in Ladakh

I am completely captivated by the serene and wondrous beauty of the small village nestled in the valley, surrounded by the majestic Himalayan mountain range. The quiet atmosphere of the village is further enhanced by the gentle sound of the stream flowing through, creating a soft melody harmonizing with the magnificent scenery. I cannot help but feel the peace and admire the extraordinary natural beauty before me.

The simple lifestyle of the villagers strikes me deeply. Without modern conveniences and luxuries, the people here live close to nature and maintain strong community bonds. I see people working together in the fields, sharing meals, and supporting each other in daily activities. This sense of community and mutual care is something that seems to have been lost in modern urban life.

During my stay, I had the opportunity to learn about their agricultural practices. I was amazed by their knowledge of sustainable farming methods that have been passed down through generations. They understand the soil, the water systems, the climate, and how to work with nature rather than against it. This wisdom is invaluable in our current time of environmental challenges.

One unforgettable memory is sharing meals with the villagers. The food is simple - mostly vegetables they grow themselves, local grains, and dairy products. Yet, there is something special about the taste and the way it is prepared with care and love. Every meal is a celebration of their connection to the land and their community.

The spiritual aspect of life here also moved me deeply. Buddhism is deeply woven into the daily life of the people. Prayer flags flutter in the wind, carrying prayers across the landscape. Prayer wheels turn, spreading compassion. Monasteries stand on hillsides, serving as centers of spiritual and community life. I felt a sense of peace and spiritual connection that is rare in the modern world.

This journey has changed my perspective on life. It has shown me that happiness and fulfillment don't come from material possessions or endless consumption. Instead, they come from meaningful relationships, connection to nature, purposeful work, and spiritual practice. I am grateful for this experience and the lessons the village and its people have taught me.
