Manish Jain is one of the most influential figures in alternative education in Asia today. His journey from prestigious institutions to grassroots education liberation is an inspiring story of reimagining what education can be.
Harvard & World Bank Years: Manish initially followed a conventional path of academic excellence and institutional success, studying at Harvard and working with the World Bank on development projects.
The Turning Point: Through his work, Manish increasingly questioned whether conventional development and education systems were actually serving communities. He began to notice how schooling often created inequality, constrained human potential, and disconnected people from their cultures and communities.
Founding Shikshantar: In response, Manish founded Shikshantar: The Barefoot University in Udaipur, India. Rather than traditional education, Shikshantar champions self-directed learning, community-based education, and the wisdom of "ordinary" people - the grandmothers, farmers, artisans, and elders who hold deep knowledge.
