[RIE] Reimagining Education with Manish Jain: A Journey from Harvard, World Bank to The University of the Grandmother

Manish Jain is one of the most influential figures in alternative education in Asia today. His journey from prestigious institutions to grassroots education liberation is an inspiring story of reimagining what education can be.

The Journey

Harvard & World Bank Years: Manish initially followed a conventional path of academic excellence and institutional success, studying at Harvard and working with the World Bank on development projects.

The Turning Point: Through his work, Manish increasingly questioned whether conventional development and education systems were actually serving communities. He began to notice how schooling often created inequality, constrained human potential, and disconnected people from their cultures and communities.

Founding Shikshantar: In response, Manish founded Shikshantar: The Barefoot University in Udaipur, India. Rather than traditional education, Shikshantar champions self-directed learning, community-based education, and the wisdom of "ordinary" people - the grandmothers, farmers, artisans, and elders who hold deep knowledge.

Core Principles of Reimagined Education

  • Self-Directed Learning: Trusting people's natural curiosity and capacity to direct their own learning
  • Community Knowledge: Valuing the wisdom and knowledge of communities themselves
  • Liberation: Freeing people from the constraints of conventional schooling to develop their full potential
  • Autonomy: Supporting people to make meaningful choices about their own learning and lives
  • Interconnection: Understanding learning as deeply rooted in relationships and community

What This Means in Practice

At Shikshantar and other Barefoot learning initiatives, there are no teachers lecturing from podiums. Instead, people learn through:

  • Apprenticeships with local craftspeople and professionals
  • Community projects that address real problems
  • Self-directed study around questions they're passionate about
  • Mentoring relationships with elders and experienced community members
  • Practical skills development through doing

The Vision for Global Change

Manish envisions a world where:

  • Learning is liberation, not domination
  • Every person's unique gifts and potential are honored
  • Communities are centers of wisdom and learning
  • Education serves justice and compassion
  • We learn how to live in harmony with nature and each other
